Limestone pavements & pastures : one day photography workshop for the RPS

Limestone pavements & pastures : one day photography workshop for the RPS

This workshop is being run on behalf of the Royal Photographic Society and tickets can be purchased through the link on this page. Non RPS members are also welcome - please see the listing for more information.

The limestone pavements and pastures of Ribblesdale enjoy a wonderful diversity of flora, typically set against a beautiful backdrop of rolling terrain, with Yorkshire's highest peaks often visible beyond. We will concentrate on a variety of limestone pastures and pavement in the Ribblesdale area; also spending time in some beautiful nature reserves. Exactly where we focus our attention will be determined by conditions on the day - it is likely we will spend most of our time in Ribblesdale and Kingsdale, but the nearby dales offer good alternatives if need be. Depending how the season pans out, we may have the chance to see the hawthorns in blossom, as well as several varieties of wildflowers and several species of birds. I will work out the best options for us on the day, depending on how things have developed and on the weather during the day.

With a small group of 6 participants, there'll be plenty of time for us to work in depth, bouncing ideas off each other and looking for potential for images in all types of location - not just the wider scenes, but also the more intimate, abstract landscapes - the limestone landscape of this area really lends itself to both approaches. There is also scope for macro photography, with flower and insect life abundant in this area.

We will look at how to make the most of conditions on the day - ensuring any kind light can be exploited to its best advantage. It is a fascinating part of the Yorkshire Dales with wonderful geology, flaura and fauna and all three of Yorkshire's tallest peaks visible - weather permitting!

Practicalities

  • What time will the workshop start and finish?

The workshop will start at 2.00pm and finish at around 8.00pm.

  • Where will we meet?

We will meet in Ribblesdale - probably near the viaduct - to be agreed nearer the time.

  • What level of photographer does this workshop suit?

Ideally suited for intermediate photographers and above. Although with a small group size, it is possible to cater for most needs.

  • How fit do I need to be?

There may be the odd steeper walk but nothing longer than about 20-30 minutes - reasonable fitness would be an advantage as well as the confidence to walk on uneven terrain and rocky limestone pavement - in in doubt, please ask.

  • What gear should I bring?

Camera and a selection of lenses - ideally covering wide angle to telephoto and macro, or at least extension tubes, if you have them.  Tripod, spare batteries and memory cards. Good walking boots. Clothing for any kind of weather. Comfortable backpack or shoulder bag .Waterproofs for you and your gear. You should also want to bring some snacks and a drink as we are unlikely to pass any open shops.

  • Can I borrow a filter kit?

You are welcome to borrow a Lee filter kit - including big stopper, little stopper and ND grads. Please note this is at your own risk, although we've had no breakages to date! Please ask in advance and advise of the filter ring sizes of any lenses you may be bringing.

  • Do I need to be an RPS member to book/attend?

No, you get a discounted rate as a member but the workshop is open to anyone.
