Hekla foothills - ‘Gateway to Hell’
Hekla has been Iceland's most active volcano over the years and in the Middle Ages, it was known as the Gateway to Hell. On this day, you could just see a hint of the still snowy foothills but it was the vibrant green satellite crater that really caught my eye on this dreich day - the colours were singing in the soft, overcast light. You can also just make out a vehicle and a few people on its ridge. A day later, when the sun made more of an appearance, the scene looked totally flat and lifeless by comparison.
