Village Open Gardens photography for the Yorkshire Post

Posted on 25th June, 2012

Our village's Open Gardens event was being promoted in the Yorkshire Post, featuring a beautifully landscaped, terraced garden with views towards the North York Moors. The article, written by a resident landscape gardener, focussed on their super collection of hostas.

With the photograph being required a few weeks before the event (in late June) options were a little bit limited, with unseasonably cold weather meaning plants were not as far developed as might have been expected at this time of year. Thankfully the hostas were coming along nicely and so it was a matter of finding a grouping with a complementary background and some good lighting.

In the end I found a beautifully back-lit hosta plant, set against a background of ferns and periwinkle and, with my 70-200 lens, was able to frame a good, tight composition. The owners of the garden were delighted with the result and it made me think I should dedicate more time to garden and plant photography, alongside my landscape work.

The event, itself, was a huge success, with over 450 visitors and more than £6000 raised for village funds!
