From the ordinary to the exotic: exhibition at Dutch House, Crayke
Posted on 25th September, 2013
I am currently exhibiting a selection of my photographs at the Dutch House in Crayke. The exhibition runs until 27th October from 10am-5pm, although the gallery is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. More details can be found here.
From the ordinary to the exotic : abstracts from Yorkshire and beyond
The main body of this exhibition features a selection of abstract (or semi-abstract) images from a variety of locations. Some are to be found within a stone’s throw of my back door. Others have involved travel to such far-flung and exotic destinations as Ladakh and Namibia.
I enjoy grand vistas as much as anyone and much of my photographic work features such scenes. However, there is something very rewarding about taking a more abstract approach to revealing the beauty to be found around us. Images that are deliberately ambiguous can hold the attention of the viewer for longer, intriguing them and making the eyes and brain work a little harder to appreciate what is before them.
For each of the prints on display here, I have provided a small description. As much as a bit of intrigue and abstraction can be rewarding and enjoyable, I’m also a firm believer that a few written clues add something to an image. I also feel a sense of ‘place’ is important - just because an image is abstract does not mean we do not have any curiosity about where it was taken.
The prints on display are all printed on archival, high grade cotton rag paper. I have chosen a very slightly textured paper because I feel it gives greater depth to the images. The prints are unframed and unmounted, hanging on wire and clips - this is an idea I stole from Anna Booth and David Ward and I'll be interested to see how the bare prints are received ;)
